There was a time when a gig in the Northern Quarter – whatever the night – was where you’d more than likely find me. Pint in hand. And probably a little too close to the speakers.
Moving away from Manchester for a bit.. plus the pandemic ‘fun’ of the past couple of years made that habit more tricky, if impossible, to execute. For all of us. Live music is nothing short of therapy in my book. And so, it’s return is a true blessing indeed.
Saturday 22 October saw me heading out of my Salford flat to the iconic Oldham St pub – Gullivers. In a gig put on by RGM (who I am lucky enough to write for), the night featured a line-up of smashing local talent bringing a range of genres to the stage. All relatively new outfits, but far from lacking in their musical prowess.

Up first, The Valleys from Huddersfield – playing their biggest gig yet – gave us a charmingly folky set with hints of indie and even country blues. A blend of harmonica tones, cajon drum beats, incredible storytelling and, unluckily a snapped string. With a sound all of their own, these are one to watch for sure.
Manchester-based Midnight People came in strong with a female-led indie rock edge. Elements of 90s grunge were apparent with a frenetic and fun set of so-far unreleased material. For fans of Wolf Alice, Black Honey, Garbage, The Cranberries and more.
Cut to our headliner – the rapidly rising ensemble NORTH. Led by actor Stu Wolfenden – who graciously invited me down after my review on their latest single ‘Manchester‘ – they’re completed by Darren Duffy, Molly Duffy, Dave Foz and Stan Matthews. For a group on their first outing it was an impressive set featuring both releases so far – the aforementioned ode to home ‘Manchester’ and striking debut single ‘Recovery’ – some new material plus a hauntingly beautiful Smiths cover to boot. And I can’t do this review without mentioning guitarist Molly Duffy. Unassuming, but incredibly talented. Her bluesy playing seemed effortless, but was a surefire hit with the crowd. I’ve been told we may get chance to hear her vocals on tracks in the future too! Despite their recent formation, NORTH are group of musicians who are no stranger to their craft and Wolfenden’s performance leaves no doubt of the passion in this project.
You can find and follow NORTH on Instagram, Facebook and Spotify – be sure to look out for new music and gigs from them in the new year 🙂
