“it’s the little things” as that old adage goes. but there’s a lot of truth in it. those simple pleasures. those little snippets of joy – where a bad mood/day/whatever can be broken – or at least lessened for the time being.
despite being quite a melancholic kinda gal – its a belief i’ve held for the longest time – that those of us who can find pleasure in the habitual, mundane, or everyday – have cracked it.
and sometimes, when you’re head first in a pit of despair or worry or sadness – it’s hard to see these little offerings and so.. i give you a list. a list of all the small things that truly bring me (often fleeting yet always perfect) joy – in the hope that your own start to show themselves..
the first cigarette in the morning. feat. black coffee. the smell of lavender oil on my pillow before i sleep. toasted bagels with simply cream cheese. toasted teacakes with too much butter, toast. garlic and herb pizza dip (with or without the pizza) spanakopita, feta cheese drizzled in olive oil, olives, grilled cheese sandwiches with lea & perrins, sweet potato fries, chippy chips with salt and vinegar. custard creams. okay now we’ve got all the food out of the way.
a boiling mug of ovaltine before bed. mint green tea, jasmine earl grey tea, yorkshire tea. listening to creepy pasta stories in bed in the dark. re-watching old episodes of QI. a nice cold pint of cider and blackcurrant. (strongbow and schwepps if absolutely possible thnx). the sound of the rain on my bedroom window at midnight. wine. memes. gigs.
the key change in kate bush’s ‘wuthering heights’ at 2 minutes 13 seconds. AND the guitar solo in the outro. the drums in ‘running up that hill’. her voice in ‘babooshka’. the entirety of ‘army dreamers’. watching footage of kate bush dancing. kate bush interviews. KATE BUSH.
looking up synonyms. looking back at the UK hits of 2006. a cat purring in my ear. listening to a really good podcast. vinyl.
not wearing a bra. recklessly trimming my fringe at 11pm. yellow roses.
putting my phone on ‘do not disturb’. re-reading classics by orwell, vonnegut and capote. reading my horoscopes. researching true crime. ending up in a wikipedia blackhole. signing out of all social media before bed.
the truth is.. i could probably go on and on and on and on. these are just things that instantly sprang to mind.
what are your little joys in life?
