vino & vinyl ~ an introduction

(and podcasts and playlists)

if you’ve read my recent post on 28 things I’ve learnt, you’ll know i love vinyl (see number 18). my parents always ALWAYS played it around the house when i was growing up. from the oasis and blur-y tunes of the 90s, my mam’s prog rockin’ Yes records all the way to my dad’s one true love – black sabbath blasting. i remember the turntable placed above the boxy Hi-Fi in the dark teak display cabinet. i remember watching the arm move of its own accord – gently across and down – guiding the needle to find the groove. and i remember looking through all their records. the colour of the vinyls. the inside sleeve notes. the artwork (the cover of Sticky Fingers by the Stones complete with real zipper being a particular shocking discovery for my 7 year old self).

and to this day, i love it. i like buying them. i like collecting them. i like playing them. i like the physical action of carefully lifting them out of the sleeve. of turning them over. of that sound that you just don’t get from digital. the vinyl revival of the past years is nothing short of a blessing in my eyes – the fact that bands and artists are choosing to release their music on vinyl is just magical tbh.

and another thing that’s magic – wine. i likes wine. and it doesn’t really matter what wine. i’m partial to the whole trilogy. from the corner shop piss to your glass of sparkling fizz. but anyway, what i’m trying to say is this – wine and music? the french would call it ‘c’est magnifique’ and i’d just say its bloody beautiful.
Vino & Vinyl was an event i’d put on weekly. in my flat. on my own. if you think there’s anything better than dancing around wine drunk in your pants to Derek and the Dominos – please do let me know.

SO, without further a do. i’ve decided to do a Vino & Vinyl feature every month. what i’ve been spinning and what i’ve been drinking. very regular habits of mine so shouldn’t be too difficult..

THIS WEEK
a bit of a throwback and a fave tipple.

the vino ~ a bottle of M&S’s finest Conte Priuli Prosecco – Vino Spumante (extra dry). described as ‘sparkling, fruity and fresh’. would agree. also went down like pop.

the vinyl ~ Arctic Monkeys 7″ Single – The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala (with B side: Little Illusion Machine (Wirral Riddler) by Miles Kane and The Death Ramps).

so this week, you would’ve found me dancing around my messy room to arctics’ back catalogue with a glass (or 3) of fizz. FYI the window was whacked open – rain or shine, in this heat. may’ve been melting, but happy (with a wet windowsill).

check back and see what i’m spinning next time..

AND as a bonus – i also have the following for you to wrap your ears around..

the podcast ~ my beautiful friend Katie – artist, clothing brand bosslady and all round superwoman – runs a podcast ‘What Katie Said’ on a variety of topics. recently i went down to LDN for a visit and we recorded a pod ever so slightly drunk and sitting on her beautiful new pink sofa. listening back sober the next day made us laugh so much.. you can give it a listen on soundcloud HERE.

the playlist ~ this month is the second Wire List i’ve curated for MCRWire. a playlist showcasing the best local artists – both up-coming and established – that you can find gigging in and around the city that month. some absolute tunes on there i won’t lie. you can find it on Spotify HERE.
